I Came When She Called

Chapter 131 min read

Jason POV

She didn’t have to explain. I was already on my way.

She messaged me late one night.

“Come to Hong Kong.”

No context. No question mark.

But I knew it was an invitation I wouldn’t refuse.

I arrived two days later.

She was waiting at the ferry pier,

hair tied up carelessly, smile somewhere between familiar and unsure.

And then she started talking—fast, endless.

About where she’d take me,

what this city meant to her,

how certain buildings “breathed” if you stood close enough.

I said almost nothing.

She didn’t seem to notice.

We wandered through Sham Shui Po,

past aging walk-ups and open-air butcher stalls.

She led me into narrow stairwells where the lights flickered

and mailboxes overflowed like forgotten stories.

“These old flats,” she said, “they’re called ‘tong fong’—tiny rooms cut from something whole.”

She looked at me when she said that.

I pretended not to notice.

There were bamboo scaffolds swaying in the heat,

neon signs stacked like poetry on top of chaos,

rooftops tangled in laundry and satellite dishes.

She kept describing the city like it was a person—

bruised, unfinished, worth loving anyway.

I just watched her.

The way her hands moved when she spoke.

How she’d occasionally glance back to check I was still there.

How she never walked too far ahead.

She didn’t touch me.

But sometimes her sleeve brushed mine—

and she didn’t pull away.

So I stayed close.

Not because I had to.

But because it felt like

She was the only map I wanted to follow.
