Vol. I · Quiet Beginnings
She Said Stay, and I Did
Jason POV
When a kiss wasn’t the start—it was her asking if he’d stay.
We crossed the harbor without speaking.
The Star Ferry rocked beneath us,
lights skipping across the water like tiny, broken promises.
She leaned into the wind.
I watched her silhouette blur against the skyline—
half-girl, half-memory.
Her apartment was a walk-up,
the kind of place that never cooled down.
Peeling walls. A rusted fan.
The sink dripped like a ticking clock.
Still, it smelled like her.
Warm, familiar, a little too sweet.
She didn’t ask me to stay.
Not directly.
She just said,
“It’s late. You don’t have to go.”
She moved around the room—
barefoot, purposeful, pretending not to care.
I sat on the edge of the narrow bed,
shoulders brushing peeling paint,
heart trying to stay quiet.
She turned off the light.
The city outside blinked through the curtain—red, gold, green.
Then she sat beside me.
Close. Still.
Until she leaned in and kissed me.
Not urgently.
Not for show.
Like she was asking me something
without using words.
So I kissed her back.
Her hands were warm and unsure.
Her breath smelled like sugar and fear.
We didn’t rush.
But we didn’t stop either.
Later, we lay under a too-thin blanket,
her leg tangled with mine,
her head against my chest like it belonged there.
I didn’t say I loved her.
She didn’t ask me to.
And maybe that’s why I stayed—
not because I was brave enough to promise her forever,
but because, just for that night,
I wanted her to believe I might.
